Lens nikkor Reviews

stars-5-0_lens-nikkorthe new standard, December 28, 2007
By PlainWhite (San Francisco, CA, USA)

Nikon lens nikkor ’s new 14-24 lens is just phenomenal. The clarity is that of a prime lens. In fact, this super-wide angle zoom lens effectively replaces the equivalent prime lenses within most of its focal length (except perhaps the 24mm range); it’s like owning a bag full of prime lenses that have been combined to make one superlative zoom lens.

Yes, it’s that good. If you check around the web, you will see the pros falling over themselves for this lens after they test it. It’s built like a tank and is precise as a Swiss watch.
Highly recommended.
stars-5-0_lens-nikkorHeavy, yes; expensive, yes; worth it, yes!, June 14, 2008
By Robert S. Stockton (Clifton Park, N.Y.)

I have been fortunate to use Leica SLR cameras and lenses for many years. Thus, my yardstick for any other lens is very high. I also own and shoot a Nikon D-200 and D-300. In particular, lens resolution, light fall off at the edges, and color saturation are very important to me. This lens is superlative in all these important respects. It is heavy, bulbous and expensive. However, I believe that the pro-sumer market is moving towards full 35mm size sensors so this lens is an investment in the future although it works extremely well on DX sensor bodies > D-40. One negative, it cannot accomodate filters, in particular, the all important circular polarizer. In my opinion, software can do remarkable things for color etc. but glare is best removed with a polarizer. If you can live with this deficiency, as I must, the lens is highly recommended.
stars-5-0_lens-nikkorShocked!, March 4, 2008
By R. Lanthier (Vienna, VA United States)

It is quite shocking to hold this 2.8 ultrawide lens. This lens is a standard-setter. It is SO SHARP wide open that you will be amazed. I read one review that said that it eliminates a bag of primes.

Yes, it is large. Yes, it is heavy. Yes, the front element is exposed and potentially vulnerable (use the lens cap!). Yes, it is not as wide as the DX lenses on DX bodies: Sigma 10-20, Tokina/Nikon 12-24. Yes, it is expensive. Yes, it is not as wide as some on DX cameras…

BUT this is a keeper and - somehow - when you mount the lens, and hold it, all those problems disappear. Will I take it hiking in Shenandoah? Nah, I put the Sigma 10-20 on for wide mucky stuff…

If you own a DX camera currently (all but D3 owners), you can invest in your FX future. BUT, it works phenomenally well on DX sensors like my D300… Helps me take great images…

A great piece of kit, as my British friends would say…
stars-5-0_lens-nikkorPhenomenal WA Lens for Nikon DSLR, July 20, 2008
By F. Irawan - See all my reviews

Gorgeous super sharp WA lens. Sharp corner to corner, at wide open aperture, at entire zoom range. The color is just pop. It is better than my AFS 17-35 (sharp only in the center, at wide open, need to stop down for sharper entire frame).

At 1st, I kind of reluctant to try it since I have 17-35 already. But after I tried it, holly smokes, I MUST to have it. It is has kind of quality that I cannot get from 17-35. The color and bokeh is just way more pleasing to my eyes. It makes D300 shows its capability in WA department.

NO filter ring is the only my draw back. I guess I have to make my own custom Lee filter holder myself. The IQ of this lens is very hard to resist. It is worth the price.

Flare is a problem, but it can be controlled easily with your technique. Most WA lenses have flare problem. I think this lens has the least.

I am not a WA guy, but after owning this lens I start to take panoramic photos.
For weddings, this lens is an absolutely must use lens.

If you need real High Quality WA lens, this IS THE LENS.

BTW, that bulbous almost protruding lens shape looks sexy, attracts quite a lot of interest at several parties. It is not fish eye lens, as many thought.

$1550 for a lens with a 10mm range?

Yes, and worth it.

First, if you use this on a combination of FX and DX bodies, you have a range of 14 to 36 mm. You cover every wide angle prime — 14mm, 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, in one package. Not bad. Add the fact that the ISO 6400 on the FX Nikon bodies is fantastic and there’s no need for 1.4 or 2.0 max apertures, you got a very versatile package in this lens.

But even if you couldn’t get 14-36 coverage, this lens would be worth the dough because it is so sharp. The first time I opened a group shot done with this lens I was blown away by the detail and sharpness. I have never seen this kind of quality out of a Nikon lens, and I own a lot of them. It is great. Colors are saturated, flare well controlled and the lens handles very nicely. I’ve used it in low light and the 2.8 shots are as good as the f/8 shots. A fantastic lens; wish I had the money to buy its cousin, the 24-70, but I have to content with the 28-70 for now.

If you can afford only one Nikon wide angle lens, make it this one.
