Use your tripod! Long focal lengths amplify any camera shake so lock down the camera and tripod. Don’t introduce shake with your shutter finger but instead consider using a remote shutter release or self timer to trigger the shutter.
Look at the other photographers – they’re stuck on wide-angle lens and won’t get the impactful images you’re getting!
What and Why

It’s extremely rare to see a cloudless McKinley. This photograph was taken by a Nikon D700 camera through a Nikon 70-200mm lens at 105mm (which is about two times magnified). To get maximum clarity throughout the entire distance, I set the aperture at f/22 using the aperture priority setting plus to get the maximum detail I used a low ISO of 400. I used the “pattern” exposure setting with an exposure compensation of -0.7 to get more saturation. The camera selected a shutter speed of 1/180 second which, although slow, was acceptable since the camera was mounted on a Gitzo G-1410 tripod with a Really Right Stuff BH-55 ball head. I tripped the shutter with a release cable which required two squeezes since I used the mirror lock up to eliminate any possible camera movement.

The Olympus E-620 Digital Camera had some really amazing features, which helped me capture unimaginable shots from far and wide angles. The kit had Zuiko twin lens with focal length 14-42mm & 40-150-2. The 12.3 megapixel sensor option allowed me to click sharp quality pictures even under bright lighting conditions. The Olympus E-620 Digital Camera also had a dual axis 2.7-inch HyperCrystal III LCD option making the camera’s menu easy to view.

Since the camera had a 270-degree swivel option that freely rotates to focus on different angles I was able to shoot pictures in any angle I wanted. I viewed the surrounding live on LCD, which was a very pleasant experience. Like most people these days, I have been using digital point and shoot cameras for years, and have greatly enjoyed taking pictures with them with reckless abandon. Soon enough, however, you start appreciating the intrinsic limitations of point and shoot cameras, even the best ones on the market: no matter how sophisticated the camera, shooting objects will never be as sharp as when you saw them with your naked eye, the colors are not exactly what you saw, and unless you have the perfect lighting conditions all of those problems only get exacerbated.

Sometimes post-production in Photoshop or a similar program can improve things to a great extent, but even this can only take you so far. For most everyday shooting this still might not be the problem, but if you want to get a bit more sophisticated with your pictures you need to take the plunge and buy a truly qualitatively different camera: a digital SLR. These cameras used to be an almost exclusive domain of professional photographers, but with the improvements in technology and the increased marketplace competition they have become accessible to regular consumers.

There are many manufacturers of DSLRs out there, with seemingly more and more entering that space every day. However, there are two well-established brands that still more or less dominate over all the others: Canon and Nikon. If you are an amateur photographer who is just starting out in the DSLR world, chances are you’ll do more than fine with any one of those brands.

One of the main reasons I decided to go with Canon is that it seems that for about the same price you get more megapixels. I like to play with images in Photoshop, and more pixels in general give you more stuff to play with. 12 megapixels of this camera are more than sufficient for most of my creative needs.

The first thing that you’ll notice with any DSLR camera is its relative size as compared to dainty point and shoots. You can never carry DSLR around as an afterthought. When you take one around you make a conscious decision to take pictures, and furthermore you will be conspicuous when taking them. These might be some of the considerations to think about when deciding on a switch from point and shoots.

In addition to size, you will also notice a very solid feel of this camera. It is not made out of cheap materials, and every part of it has been thoughtfully designed for durability. You shouldn’t casually toss this camera around, but it is comforting to know that it can probably withstand most everyday small bumps if they come its way.

This camera has many features and settings, and all of this might be overwhelming to a first-time SLR user. In addition to automatic settings that are now also a familiar feature of most point and shoot cameras, there are multiple “creative” settings that include various levels of manual control, including a completely manual operation. When you first start shooting I would recommend using these “creative” settings to experiment and play with.

However, if you are still unsure of what you are doing and there is shot that you absolutely have to take then the automatic settings would be much more appropriate. One of the annoying features of this camera is that it doesn’t allow you to preview your shots on the screen while in one of the automatic modes. The so-called “Live View” can only be used in one of the manual modes. When shooting in automatic mode, you will have to use the viewfinder. This in itself may motivate you to learn more about photography and the manual shooting.

The picture quality of the photographs that I have taken has been spectacular. You will notice a clear difference from the point-and-shoot photograph from the very first shots that you take, and so will all of your friends. Just prepare yourself for becoming the “designated photographer.” The only problem that I’ve had is that in low light photographs have pretty noticeable orange glow. I’ve been able to avoid this only when fiddling with shooting controls in one of the manual modes.

Another amazing feature of this camera is the speed with which it takes pictures. At 3.5 frames per second, you will be able to capture some pretty amazing shots if you go into the continuous shooting mode. I’ve been able to capture electric sparks on the Van Der Graaf generator and some really neat sports action photos.

This is the last of the Canon Rebel DSLRs that does not allow you to shoot video. Unless you really care about high-definition video this may not be that much of a problem. I for one don’t find myself filming videos all that often, and when I do a stand-alone video camera is more than sufficient for all of my needs.

Overall I have been extremely satisfied with this camera over the last two years that I’ve had it. Most manufacturers (Canon included) keep coming with bigger and better models almost every year, but unless you really need some of the latest top-of-the line features you will be more than well served with this camera. I for one don’t feel like I have even scratched the surface of what this camera has to offer.

The D80 offers a new “kit” lens, the 18-135mm f/4-5.6G AF-S ED DX, and a new vertical grip, the MB-D80. The kit lens is, by definition, fairly low-end, made to keep the price of the camera affordable to the photography newbie. The zoom has a considerably slower shutter speed than the D70 - 1/4000 compared to the previous 1/8000.

I was happy to discover that there were also some welcome improvements. The D80’s viewfinder is larger and brighter than the D70’s, and the sensor has around 30% more resolution.

The sensor in the D80 is an ICX493AQA CCD made by Sony. The same sensor is used in the Sony Alpha 100 and Pentax K10D. 10.2 megapixels translates as 3872 x 2592 pixel images, enough to produce straight-from-camera prints up to about 11×16″ without resizing. The base ISO of the CCD is 100, with third-stop increments up through ISO 1600. You can also boost ISO one more stop, up to an effective ISO 3200.

Noise in the D80 sensor stems mainly from three design elements: the APS frame size, the smaller overall size of the photosites as compared to the 6mp sensors, and the lack of in-sensor NR electronics. That said, Nikon has integrated a number of things into the D80 to address the potential for increased noise over the previous consumer cameras. For example, once again data is kept in 12-bit space right up until the final compression to an 8-bit JPEG. Second, the internal digitization engine has a noise reduction component in it. All in all, low light images are easily comparable quality to the D70. This is perhaps primarily due to the larger CCD sensor.

The camera body is technically slightly smaller in all dimensions compared to those of the D70s, but current owners will find the design very similar. Most of the buttons are the same and in the same places, and there are dedicated buttons for many commonly used functions. For example, a cluster of buttons next to the shutter let you change metering mode, exposure compensation, drive mode, and AF mode. Meanwhile, the buttons to the left of the 2.5-inch, 230,000-pixel LCD screen let you change white balance, ISO, and image size and quality settings without diving into menus. About the only function without its own dedicated control is AF zone selection, though the camera’s programmable function button can be programmed to cover that if you so choose. The default for this button is to display the current ISO setting.

Three dials adorn the camera body. The mode dial lets you choose between program, aperture- or shutter-priority, full manual, full auto, or any of six preset exposure scene modes. The other two dials, located on the front and back of the grip, let you change aperture and shutter speed. Together, they make full manual shooting quick and easy, with a menu system that is easy to use.

For the most part, Nikon has negotiated the quality trade-off well in order to offer a DSLR camera for under $1000. It’s still slightly pricier than comparable Canon or Petax models, but with Nikon’s imaging reputation, it can easily charge a touch more without anyone blinking a eye.
